BRP Change of Circumstances in UK

This guide explains how to report a change of circumstances for those with a BRP or UK visa. There are different processes for reporting a change of address and personal details.

INSIDE THE UK WITH BRP: After entering the United Kingdom you must report any changes if:

  1. You have a biometric residence permit (called BRP for short).
  2. You have applied to get a BRP and are waiting for a decision.

How you report a BRP change of circumstances will depend on what changes you are reporting.


How to Report a BRP Change of Address

The process allows you to change your address only. You can do so without having to apply for a new BRP. The form you need to complete will depend on whether:

Reporting all other Changes

If there are any other changes in your circumstances you must report them. Different circumstantial changes determine the method used for reporting them.

Report a BRP Name Change or Personal Details

If your name or personal details change you must apply for a new BRP without delay. Some examples include a change in your:

  • Name (e.g. you get married)
  • Nationality
  • Date of birth (e.g. if there was a problem with the BRP)
  • Gender
  • Facial appearance

The form used to report the change and apply for a new BRP will depend on whether:

  1. You have permission to stay temporarily in the United Kingdom ‘leave to remain‘.
  2. You have permission to settle in the United Kingdom ‘indefinite leave to remain‘.

Note: You must make an application for the new BRP within three (3) months. Failing to do so can result in a fine up to £1,000 or you may get your stay shortened.

Other Changes to Report

There may be other detail changes to your original BRP application that you also need to report. These change of circumstances can include:

  • Getting a criminal conviction.
  • Separating from your spouse or partner.
  • Situations where your children stop living with you ‘permanently’.

Note: Fill in and return the ” to the address written on it.


Inside the United Kingdom with a Visa

BRP Change of Circumstances

After entering the United Kingdom you must report any changes if:

  1. You have a visa for the United Kingdom.
  2. You have applied for a visa and are waiting for a decision.

How you report a visa change of circumstances will depend on what changes you are reporting.

Report a BRP Name Change or Personal Details

Some specific circumstances apply whereby you must transfer your visa from your passport. It applies to an overall stay longer than 6 months in the United Kingdom and any of these details change to those on your visa document:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality
  • Gender
  • Facial appearance

There is a fee to pay for transferring a visa to a biometric residence permit. But, reporting these changes or transferring a visa is not required if your stay is under 6 months in the United Kingdom.

Note: Complete the ‘Notification of change of circumstances: form MCC‘ if you applied for a visa and await the decision.

Reporting all other Changes

You can use the same form to report any other changes of circumstances such as if:

  • The contact details for yourself, dependent family members, or your legal representative change.
  • You separate from your spouse or partner.
  • Your children stop living with you.
  • You get a criminal conviction.

The GOV.UK website has a facility to update the address of or your legal representative online.


Outside the United Kingdom

The reporting process is different for those outside of the United Kingdom. You should contact the visa application centre where you applied from any time there is a change to:
