Ping Pong Balls Safe for Road Haulage

In true table tennis style the hot issue of transporting ping pong balls got batted across the table. UN chiefs have now declared that ping pong balls are no longer classified as dangerous goods.

PING PONG BALLS DANGEROUS? Ping Pong balls are usually made of celluloid or similar flammable plastic composites.

That meant the balls got listed in ADR regulations for the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road.

The reason for the listing was because of the deadly fumes produced if some ping pong balls catch light.

But, new rules for transporting ping pong balls come into force on the 1st of January 2017. The amendments will see ping pong balls removed as hazardous cargo for road hauliers.

New SP 383 rules state that table tennis balls are not subject to ADR providing they do not exceed 3 grams net weight. The total net mass of ping pong balls must not exceed 500 grams per package.

The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) is the governing body for the popular game. Official table tennis rules and regulations require balls to be 2.7 grams in weight.

The Head of Dangerous Goods Information

A statement given by the Head of Dangerous Goods Information said: “Most hauliers accept that moving petroleum or explosives falls within the ADR requirements. But, a change in the regulations shows some innocuous cargoes are also subject to the rules.

FTA Member Advice Centre helps its members to ensure they operate according to the dangerous goods rules. They also follow other safety regulations which apply to all commercial vehicle operators.”

Freight Transport Association

FTA Member Advice Centre responds to 20,000+ member phone call enquiries each year. They help hauliers make sense of the variety of road freight rules.

Transportation safety regulations range from driving time limits to vehicle lighting requirements. They also affect the movement of livestock and those who operate outside the United Kingdom.

The FTA is one of the largest trade associations in the United Kingdom. The Freight Transport Association has a rich heritage of support in the transportation industry since 1889. They represent the transport interests of UK companies moving goods by road, rail, sea and air.

Freight Transport Association will produce a briefing note outlining the changes to the rules of transporting ping pong balls. You can contact the FTA transport advisers on 0370 60 50 000.
