PING PONG BALLS DANGEROUS? Ping Pong balls are usually made of celluloid or similar flammable plastic composites.
That meant the balls got listed in ADR regulations for the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road.
The reason for the listing was because of the deadly fumes produced if some ping pong balls catch light.
But, new rules for transporting ping pong balls come into force on the 1st of January 2017. The amendments will see ping pong balls removed as hazardous cargo for road hauliers.
New SP 383 rules state that table tennis balls are not subject to ADR providing they do not exceed 3 grams net weight. The total net mass of ping pong balls must not exceed 500 grams per package.
The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) is the governing body for the popular game. Official table tennis rules and regulations require balls to be 2.7 grams in weight.
The Head of Dangerous Goods Information
A statement given by the Head of Dangerous Goods Information said: “Most hauliers accept that moving petroleum or explosives falls within the ADR requirements. But, a change in the regulations shows some innocuous cargoes are also subject to the rules.
