{"id":4934,"date":"2023-05-03T05:04:26","date_gmt":"2023-05-03T05:04:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theukrules.co.uk\/?page_id=4934"},"modified":"2023-09-19T10:09:17","modified_gmt":"2023-09-19T10:09:17","slug":"reporting-changes","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.theukrules.co.uk\/rules\/employment\/benefits\/child\/reporting-changes\/","title":{"rendered":"When and How to Report Changes to Child Benefit Claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>CHANGES AFFECTING CHILD BENEFIT<\/strong>: You could lose out on some of your entitlements if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You forget to tell the Child Benefit Office about circumstantial changes.<\/li>\n<li>You &#8216;deliberately&#8217; avoid informing them about changes to your family life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Failing to report the changes could result in an overpayment. You will need to <a href=\"\/rules\/employment\/benefits\/child\/repay-overpayment\/\">repay a Child Benefit overpayment<\/a> to their Debt Management services.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Report a Change in Child Circumstances<\/h2>\n<p>As a rule, all <a href=\"\/rules\/employment\/benefits\/child\/age-16-to-19\/\">Child Benefit stops<\/a> on the 31st of August on, or immediately after, the day a child celebrates their 16th birthday. An exception may apply if they stay in approved education or training.<\/p>\n<p>You must <a href=\"\/rules\/employment\/benefits\/tax-credits\/\">notify the Child Benefit Office<\/a> if your child chooses to stay in education or training. They will also need to know if at any time they leave that education or training.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, you must <strong>report any of these changes in child circumstances<\/strong> to the Child Benefit Office and without delay if your child:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Begins paid work for 24 hours a week or more.<\/li>\n<li>Will live away from you for either 8 weeks in a row or more than 56 days in a 16-week period.<\/li>\n<li>Will go abroad permanently, for more than 12 weeks, or moves to or from Northern Ireland.<\/li>\n<li>Goes to prison for more than 8 weeks, will be <a href=\"\/rules\/employment\/benefits\/child\/children-in-hospital-care\/\">in hospital or residential care<\/a> for more than 12 weeks, or <a href=\"\/rules\/employment\/benefits\/child\/child-or-parent-dies\/\">your child dies<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Goes missing, changes their name, gets married, <a href=\"\/rules\/legal\/citizenship\/marriage-and-civil-partnership\/\">formulates a civil partnership<\/a>, or starts to live with a partner.<\/li>\n<li>Starts getting certain benefits (examples include: Income Support, Jobseeker\u2019s Allowance, tax credits or Employment, Universal Credit, <a href=\"\/rules\/employment\/benefits\/carers\/incapacity-benefit\/\">Incapacity Benefit<\/a>, and Support Allowance).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Report a Change in Family Circumstances<\/h2>\n<p>A difference in family circumstances also means you must <a href=\"\/rules\/employment\/benefits\/tax-credits\/\">notify the Child Benefit Office<\/a> straight away for any of these changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your bank account, name or address changes.<\/li>\n<li>Your immigration status changes or you <a href=\"\/rules\/immigration\/visa\/right-to-reside\/\">lose the right to reside<\/a> in the United Kingdom.<\/li>\n<li>You have a baby, a child comes to live with you, or the child&#8217;s parent has died.<\/li>\n<li>You intend to go abroad for more than 8 weeks.<\/li>\n<li>You or your partner intend to move abroad permanently or for more than a year.<\/li>\n<li>You move to or from Northern Ireland.<\/li>\n<li>Payments or contributions for a child who does not live with you stop or change.<\/li>\n<li>You get paid to look after a child by a local council or similar.<\/li>\n<li>You get a prison sentence of more than 8 weeks.<\/li>\n<li>A relationship ends, or you start a new relationship (e.g. you move in with a new partner or remarry).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Family changes can also affect <a href=\"\/rules\/employment\/benefits\/tax-credits\/\">tax credits<\/a> and certain benefits. You must <a href=\"\/rules\/employment\/benefits\/child\/\">notify the Child Benefit Office<\/a> of any changes and the date of the change.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Child Benefit Tax Charge<\/h2>\n<p>There is another reason to report changes to Child Benefit claims. It can increase the likelihood of paying the <a href=\"\/rules\/employment\/benefits\/child\/high-rate-taxpayers\/\">High Income Child Benefit Tax Charge<\/a>.
