{"id":4921,"date":"2023-05-02T06:37:38","date_gmt":"2023-05-02T06:37:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theukrules.co.uk\/?page_id=4921"},"modified":"2023-09-20T06:51:37","modified_gmt":"2023-09-20T06:51:37","slug":"housing-costs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.theukrules.co.uk\/rules\/employment\/benefits\/universal-credit\/housing-costs\/","title":{"rendered":"Get Help Paying for Housing Costs Under Universal Credit (UC)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>WHAT CAN YOU GET?<\/strong> You must qualify for Universal Credit to get help paying for your housing.<\/p>\n<p>Having eligibility for the &#8216;UC housing payment&#8217; could help you to pay for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rent paid to a private landlord.<\/li>\n<li>Rental payments and some service charges (e.g. paid to a local authority or a housing association).<\/li>\n<li>Mortgage interest payments and some service charges if you (or your partner) own the property that you are living in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: You must <a href=\"\/rules\/employment\/benefits\/universal-credit\/reporting-changes\/\">report a change of circumstances<\/a> once you start to claim UC housing payment. Failing to do so means your benefits can stop altogether.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"category-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"normal-content-one\">\n<h5>Living in Temporary or Supported Housing<\/h5>\n<p>The Universal Credit housing costs element does not cover all types of accommodation. You cannot use it to pay for supported, sheltered, temporary, or <a href=\"\/rules\/housing\/emergency-council-housing\/\">emergency council housing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/apply-housing-benefit-from-council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apply for Housing Benefit<\/a> through your local council authority instead. Contact the council to see if you can get help paying your rent.<\/p>\n<p>What if you become homeless while you are getting Universal Credit? If this happens, you must <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/sign-in-universal-credit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sign in to your Universal Credit account<\/a> and report it online as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"normal-content\">\n<h5>Claimants Living in Scotland<\/h5>\n<p>People living in a &#8216;full service&#8217; area in Scotland can get the housing payment paid to themselves or direct to their landlord. You can choose to get the payment made once or twice each month.<\/p>\n<p>Notification about this option comes after the first payment for people who make a new claim. You might also qualify for the Council Tax Reduction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: The latest changes affect the amount a household can get from a list of benefits.
