Once you get it, the child&#8217;s passport is valid for five (5) years.<\/p>\n<p>The cost of getting a passport for your child or baby varies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you apply online the cost is \u00a349 for a child passport.<\/li>\n<li>If you apply with a paper form from the Post Office the cost is \u00a358.50.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a rule, the application process takes up to three (3) weeks for you to receive the official document. But, you can <a href=\"\/rules\/immigration\/passports\/get-a-passport-fast\/\">get a passport urgently<\/a> by using the one week Fast Track service.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: The rules are different for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/overseas-passports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overseas British passport applications<\/a> (e.g. applying from outside of the United Kingdom).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>Who Can Apply for a Child Passport<\/h3>\n<p>The person who applies for the child or baby passport must have <a href=\"\/rules\/children\/childcare\/pregnancy\/parental-responsibility\/\">parental rights and responsibilities<\/a>. The same person (or persons) must also sign the form.<\/p>\n<p>As a rule, you will need to give the details of both parents when you apply. So what if you are unable to provide the details of the other parent?<\/p>\n<p>If only one person applies, you should include a letter with the application. The letter should state why you cannot give the other person&#8217;s details. Typical reasons could be if the birth certificate has only one name recorded on it or one person adopted the child on their own.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Which Child Passport should You Apply For?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"category-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"normal-content-one\">\n<h5>Apply for a First Child Passport<\/h5>\n<p>Unless your child has held a British passport before, you will need to <a href=\"\/rules\/immigration\/passports\/child-passport\/first-child-passport\/\">apply for a first child passport<\/a>. But, the child must be under 16 and have British nationality to meet the requirements.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"normal-content\">\n<h5>Renew a Child Passport<\/h5>\n<p>Until children reach 16 years old, you can choose to <a href=\"\/rules\/immigration\/passports\/child-passport\/renew-a-child-passport\/\">renew a child passport<\/a> any time you like. You would not lose any time remaining on the existing passport providing it is not more than nine (9) months.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"category-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"normal-content-one\">\n<h5>Replace a Lost or Stolen Child Passport<\/h5>\n<p>Besides canceling a lost, stolen, or a damaged child passport, you will also need a replacement. There are several easy ways to <a href=\"\/rules\/immigration\/passports\/child-passport\/replace-a-child-passport\/\">replace a lost, stolen, or damaged child passport<\/a> (i.e. online or by post).<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"normal-content\">\n<h5>Change the Name or Personal Details<\/h5>\n<p>If your child changes their name or certain other details they will need to get a new passport.
