UK History: A beginners guide to the ancient and modern history of the United Kingdom. On the world map, the UK sits to the northwest of mainland Europe.

The whole of the United Kingdom is often referred to as Britain, or Great Britain. London is the capital city and home of the Queen.

The political union of the kingdoms of England and Scotland became a unified sovereign state in 1707. A united kingdom which is now called Great Britain.

To quote a famous historian Simon Schama; “What began as a hostile merger would end in a full partnership in the most powerful going concern in the world. It was one of the most astonishing transformations in European history.”

A further Act of Union occurred in 1800. It saw the Kingdom of Ireland added to the union to become the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
