Lanka Premier League 2026: Teams & Predictions

LPL 2026 runs July 10–August 5 across four Sri Lanka venues. Discover the five competing franchises, draft changes, new ownership, and title contenders.

Lanka Premier League 2026: Teams, Favorites and Season Predictions

The sixth version of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) was confirmed after numerous delays, terminated franchises, and an initial co-hosted stint for the 2026 ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup. SLC confirmed July 10th to August 5th will be the tournament window — 24 games, four venues, and five teams.

A Tournament Reshaped by Ownership Turmoil

A South Asian T20 League has not experienced nearly as many changes to franchises as the LPL. In fact, prior to the 2026 season of the LPL, Sri Lanka Cricket canceled two of its original franchise partners: due to unfulfilled contracts, the Lyca Group’s partnership for the Jaffna Kings was terminated; similarly, due to unfulfilled contracts, the Colombo Strikers were canceled. Fans who are watching the competition from an SL betting site may be surprised at how much different the teams appear in the field, prior to a single ball being thrown in 2026. The team that represented Colombo had been purchased by Witness Sports Alliance LLC (Indian entrepreneurs), which includes Saranyan Palaniswamy & K.C. Shyam Kangayan, and will be called the Colombo Kaps. At present, there is still no replacement team selected for the Jaffna slot.

The instability is nothing new. In 2024, the Dambulla franchise changed hands mid-tournament after co-owner Tamim Rahman was arrested on match-fixing charges. The Dambulla Sixers emerged from that episode under new ownership, and they are one of the confirmed returning sides for 2026.

The Five Teams Competing in 2026

The five franchises set to feature in LPL 2026 are Colombo Kaps, Dambulla Sixers, Galle Marvels, Kandy Falcons, and Jaffna (pending confirmation of new ownership). Here is a summary of each:

The Jaffna franchise has won four titles, while the Kandy franchise has won only one title in league history. In the 2024 final, Rilee Rossouw hit 106 not out off 53 balls, with Kusal Mendis adding 72, as Jaffna chased 185 in just 16.4 overs. Fans who back teams across a four-week competition and need to understand payout conditions on their chosen platform — including, for instance, Melbet withdrawal rules — will find this edition particularly active, given the high volume of fixtures. Galle’s presence in the 2024 final confirms they remain a genuine contender despite never lifting the trophy.

From Auction to Draft: What Changes

While other T20 leagues like the Indian Premier League and the Pakistan Super League are using the player auction model, the Lanka Premier League has decided to go the player draft route. This marks a return to the system used in the league’s first three seasons, and it carries significant implications for squad composition.

Key differences the draft introduces for 2026:

  • Players are distributed through a centralized SLC-managed process, not competitive bidding
  • New ownership groups avoid the capital-intensive costs of auction-driven signings
  • The online portal for foreign player registration opened on May 4, 2026, with international interest reported as high
  • Draft order determines squad depth — coaching staff quality and scouting matter more than budgets
  • Domestic and overseas players are allocated in the same process, unlike some auction-based leagues

Historically, the draft format has rewarded franchises with experienced cricket operations. Kandy Falcons, 2023 champions, have demonstrated that kind of organizational discipline.

Venues: The SSC Makes Its LPL Debut

The sixth edition of the LPL will take place from July 10 through August 5, with the newly renovated Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC), located in Colombo, hosting its inaugural event as an LPL venue. In addition to being part of the venues for the LPL, the SSC was also renovated to accommodate five of the games that were held during the ICC T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka, which included the opening game of Pakistan vs. the Netherlands.

All matches will be hosted by either the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo, the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy, or the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium. For the first time since the inception of the LPL, there are now three locations where fans can watch games; this is going to increase national fan accessibility considerably.

Season Predictions and Title Contenders

Predicting outcomes before squads are finalized carries real uncertainty, but historical patterns still matter. Wanindu Hasaranga leads all-time LPL wicket-takers with 72 dismissals, and whoever secures him in the draft holds a structural bowling advantage. Avishka Fernando holds the record for the most runs in LPL history, amassing 1,544 runs across five seasons — another pivotal draft target.

Colombo Kaps enter as the tournament wildcard. New investors, a blank slate squad, and no LPL institutional memory can produce either fresh aggression or early inconsistency. Kandy Falcons, with title experience and stable ownership, represent the most reliable pre-tournament pick among franchises with confirmed continuity.

Several franchises will be under new ownership, though no official announcements have been made yet, which means the player draft in late May will be the first real indicator of competitive balance. The LPL has produced compelling cricket through ownership chaos before. With four debut venue nights at the SSC, a revamped franchise map, and international player registrations now open, the 2026 edition already has more moving parts than any previous season.
