Biometric Residence Permit Problems

This guide lists the most common biometric residence permit problems. Check what to do if yours has not arrived and how to report a problem with a new BRP.

BRP ISSUES: What should you do if a BRP identity card does not arrive?

You can report it online if your biometric residence permit has not arrived providing:

  • You applied from inside the United Kingdom.
  • The Home Office ‘decision letter‘ stating you can remain in the UK arrived over 10 days ago.

You can also report a missing biometric residence permit. You will need to provide:

  1. Your full name, your date of birth, and your nationality.
  2. An email address or a postal address.
  3. Your decision letter issued by the Home Office.

Someone else can also report a missing BRP on your behalf. You might choose to ask a legal representative, the college or university, or your employer.

You can report a BRP not delivered online to the Home Office. They will send you an email within 5 working days. It may take longer if they do not have your email address. Their response will explain the next step to make.

Note: Do not use the online reporting service if DX Courier Company tried to deliver the BRP and left their card. You must contact the courier to rearrange DX BRP delivery.

Report a Problem with Biometric Residence Permit

You must report any problem with a new BRP within 10 days of getting it. If not, in most cases you will have to apply for a BRP replacement card and pay for it.

BRP Mistakes: Visa Length or Conditions

What if you identify some mistakes in the length or conditions of your visa? You can ask for a visa administrative review providing you applied for the visa from inside the United Kingdom.

Other BRP Problems

Use this link to the government website to report a problem with a new BRP online. The same process applies for other BRP issues such as:

  • The identity card has a mistake on it. It could be your name, date of birth, or the gender is wrong.
  • There was some damage to the biometric residence permit when you received it.

You will need to provide:

  1. The number on your biometric residence permit.
  2. Your full name, your date of birth, and your nationality. This information must be as it appears on the BRP.
  3. An email address or a postal address.

Someone else can report the BRP problem for you. You might choose an employer, a legal representative, college, university, or a charity.

Once you inform the Home Office they will send you an email within 5 working days. It may take longer if they do not have your email address. Their response will explain the next step to make.
