Reapply for Your Driver's Licence

Reapplying for a Driving Licence

DVLA can revoke driver licences (take them away) or you may need to surrendered it due to poor health. There is a set process to reapply for your driving licence if you had a medical condition.

LICENCE REVOKED? This section explains how to apply for your driver's licence if it got taken away (revoked).

You will get a letter from the DVLA if they take away your licence. The same applies if you must surrender it or they refuse an application for a driving licence.

The DVLA letter will have information on how long you must wait before applying for a new licence.

Note: Once you receive the letter from the DVLA you can reapply eight (8) weeks before the end of the stated period.

Reapply for a Car or Motorcycle Licence

You need to complete a D1 application form to reapply for a licence following a health condition. You must also send the correct form that relates to your particular medical condition. Send both forms together to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.

In some cases, you will need to provide evidence of your fitness to drive. Check the information stated about this in the letter from the DVLA.

Note: Contact DVLA or a Post Office to get a D1 pack. Your doctor must support your request to get your driving licence back. Thus, you must meet the medical standards for driving a vehicle.

Reapply for a Bus, Coach, or Lorry Licence

The process of reapplying for a bus, coach, or lorry licence uses a different document. Complete a D2 application form with the relevant form for your medical condition. Send both forms to Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency address in Swansea.

Anyone aged 45 to 65 will also need to fill in a D4 and send it to the DVLA if it's been 5 years since you last did so. Send the D4 along with the D2 form.

In some cases, you will need to provide evidence of your fitness to drive. Check the information stated about this in the letter from the DVLA.

The rules change once more when you reach the age of 65. You will need to renew your licence each year from then on. You must send a completed D4 medical report form with each annual application.

DVLA Address to Send the Application

Note: You can send the completed applications by fax or by postal methods to the Drivers Medical Group.

When Can You Start Driving Again?

Different rules apply to when you can drive again after losing a licence. It will depend on whether:

Revoked or Refused Licences on Medical Reasons

If it got revoked or refused you will need your doctor to confirm that you meet the medical standards for driving. Providing the doctor supports your fitness to drive you can then reapply for a driving licence following a medical condition.

Voluntarily Surrendered Driving Licence

Providing you meet all the conditions you can drive while your licence gets renewed by DVLA. To continue driving all these must apply:

Note: Read the guidance titled 'Can I drive while my application is with DVLA? (INF188/6)' for more information.
