ANIMAL TRANSPORT: The rules relate most to those who transport live animals by road.
In particular, it is the movement of cattle, goats, pigs, poultry, sheep or equine on road journeys over 65km.
The mileage also includes travel up to and including eight (8) hours. In this case, drivers must undertake a legal qualification to ensure competence.
We refer to Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005. It stipulates the importance of the protection of animals during transport and its related operations.
This regulation requires that those transporting and handling animals in connection with economic activity get trained in the relevant technical provisions of the Regulation.
Compliance comes under the Council Regulation (EC) 1/2005. That particular piece of legislation took effect from the 5th of January 2007. The general conditions of animal transportation also stipulate that:
- The animals are fit enough to undertake the journey.
- The personnel who handle the animals are competent and trained as appropriate. They should carry out their tasks without using violence or any other method likely to cause fear, suffering, or injury.
- Enough water, feed, and rest gets offered to the animals at suitable intervals. Each should be appropriate in quality and quantity according to animal species and size.

Thus, proper training in transporting livestock regulations and safety requirements is essential. Those involved have a duty to ensure the animals get protected in the correct manner.

- Watering and feeding intervals for animals during transportation.
Note: It enables a driver to be compliant when using road vehicles for transporting farm animals, equine, and birds as an economic activity.
The assessment for the competence of this qualification is a one off requirement. But, stricter regulations apply when transporting animals on journeys longer than 8 hours.
